Pismo Beach Lifeguard Division
The CAL FIRE/Pismo Beach Fire Department operates the Pismo Beach Lifeguard Division.  Lifeguards are hired on a seasonal basis and will work from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.  The lifeguards protect a 1.5-mile stretch of beach with four lifeguard towers and a patrol vehicle.  A Lead Lifeguard who reports directly to an on-duty Fire Captain or the Fire Chief supervises lifeguards.  Seasonal staffing consists of 20-25 lifeguards.

The CAL FIRE / Pismo Beach Lifeguard Mission is to provide a safe atmosphere and environment for all beach patrons visiting Pismo Beach

General Description of Position
Lifeguard employment is temporary position acting under the administrative direction of the CAL FIRE / Pismo Beach Fire Department.  Lifeguards are responsible for the safeguard of the public in the water and on the beach.

Basic Statements of Duties
    •     To rescue and administer emergency medical care to an injured
           victim.
    •     To prevent accidents both in the water and on the beach.
    •     To constantly assess the changing surf conditions.
    •     To enforce local municipal codes pertaining to water and beach 
          safety.
    •     To perform public education and notify beach patrons of 
           potential hazards.
    •     To perform searches for lost persons both in and out of the
           water.

Minimum Qualifications
Must have the ability to follow instructions, communicate effectively orally and in writing, prepare reports and must have a sound aquatic background with knowledge of ocean and beach hazards, but most importantly establish and maintain a positive working relationship with lifeguard and fire personnel.

Education, Licenses, and Certifications
    •     18 years of age or older
    •     High school diploma or G.E.D.
    •     Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
    •     Must provide proof of auto insurance.
    •     Valid certification in Title 22 First Aid through American Red
          Cross.
    •     CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
    •     Must successfully complete a United States Lifesaving
          Association Ocean Lifeguard I.  
    •     All requirements must be met prior to employment.

Salary
$10.76 an hour for newly appointed lifeguards and additional $1 for a valid E.M.T. certificate.  A 4% COLA is scheduled for July 2008.

Physical Requirements
Applicants will be expected to pass a 1,000-meter ocean swim in 20 minutes or less.  Will be examined by a licensed physician and must be found to be free from any physical, emotional, mental and drug condition.  A background investigation and finger printing will be required prior to hiring.
